Have a friend selling a MacBook which I am considering for my daughter who is after one for general [basic] study-type use.
How much should I offer?

MacBook Pro 13 (2019)
1.4Ghz i5
256GB SSD
8GB RAM

It is in great condition.
MacBook and Charger only - no box.

I know I know, its an Intel model, but she would only be using it for general office-type stuff so nothing too taxing....

These models are very prone to keyboard failures. They have a 4 year warranty from the purchase date on the keyboard, but it's still something to keep in mind.

I know this isn’t specifically what you’re asking here, but if willing to spend $600-700 the base 2020-22 MacBook Air (8GB/256) is absolutely perfect for your daughter’s needs. It is a much better computer than the one you shared above and would last her (and you) longer, without question. Check Swappa.com and you’ll see them sold in the $600-700 range frequently. Best of luck!

A 2019 MacBook Pro 13" has "the butterfly keyboard" that has been so problematic for owners.
It's HIGHLY prone to failure.
When it does fail, the ENTIRE TOP CASE of the computer must be replaced (you can't replace the keyboard itself).
This will cost a minimum of $750 -- EVEN FOR A SINGLE KEY.

Be aware that Apple put into place an "extended warranty" for the butterfly keyboards, but the warranty is 4 years long. That means that you will only be covered through 2023.
After that, if the keyboard fails, YOU will pay.

Again, DON'T buy this.
Look for something (anything) else...

This is all true (I actually just picked up my wife's 2018 from Apple, after having it's keyboard/top cover replaced under the extended warranty for a bad key).

But... if he can get it for $300, it's not totally unreasonable. He should just think of $300-$400 as money thrown away if/when the keyboard starts to fail.

I was considering a new M1 Air, but its her first MacBook so didn't want to throw too much at it for now until she knows she can get along with it etc. I don't mind whether its a late Intel or M model to be fair as it'll only be used for light office work anyways.....

Well at least you know to not pay £450 if the seller/your friend comes back asking for more
