I know that SD movies seem to use up between 1-2GB, and I was wondering if Apple does ever start selling HD movies how much space they use. Any ideas?

Define HD. The recently released family guy disc had an Apple ready HD version on it if i'm not mistaken.

The ones I have are about 3.75 gigs - Im sure it all depends on the rips. Also there use to be a cap on file size at 4 gigs - not sure if thats been lifted (I think its been changes for files that reside on the AppleTV hard drive but not for streaming but Im not 100% sure).

the HD movies on iTunes/Apple TV

I was thinking the HD movies that are available through Apple TV for renting. For instance, if I have a 40GB Apple TV, is it possible that if I only have 2gb of space free that I can't rent or watch a HD movie?

I downloaded a 720p movie (one of the Harry Potter films) from Xbox Live, and it weighed in around 6.5GB. I reckon a 1080p movie could be anything up to from 11 to 15GB?

You could compress them a lot further, and I'd guess how much depends on what kind of movie and how high your visual standards are!

"Live Free or Die Hard" for the ATV from Apple (720p, DD) is 3.98 gb.

I started downloading that tonight. After about 1 hour it is 60% downloaded.

Does that sound right?

...for 6Mbps cable and a brand new (bought today - the router not the iMac) 802.11n Gigabit AEBS and 24" iMac with 802.11n. It took at least 5 maybe 10 minutes before I got the you can start it now popup. But I wasn't planning on watching it tonight.

Roland - we're on Qwest at 1.5 mbps. I started at 8 pm and by 10 pm it was something like 25% finished. Went to bed and watched it the next night. No way it'll be real-time for us; not unless we pay for the bandwidth. And I'm too cheap for that. :)

Live Free or Die Hard downloaded in approx. 2hr - 2hr20min. I don't remember what time I started it somewhere between 8:15 and 8:40. By 10:40 it was completely done. It is the only movie on my Apple TV and iTunes reports 3.99 GB of video.

As a test I started downloading from the Apple site the 10.5.2 combo update (I wanted a large file) and it rings in at 343 MB. I was getting a fluctuation from 500-520 KB/s. And it estimated 11-13 minutes to download. So at 1/2 a MB per second that's 30MB per minute, or 11.5 minutes to download 343MB. Using that, a 3.99GB HD movie file, or 4096MB would approx. 2hr16min.

What forces this 4GB limit? The max file size in HFS Plus is a tad bigger (approx. 8 million TB), so it's not that.

The 4GB limit is an iTunes limit for movie files and assuming for Apple TV too. Not sure if that limit is from Quicktime or just iTunes.

Hmmm, I wonder if it's due to the FAT32 filesystem's 4GB limit - it's used on many PCs (probably most Macs that use Boot Camp) and possibly on some iPods?

Though it would be odd if Apple created an iTunes file size limit for all filesystems based on the most limited filesystem available.

I can't see how it could possibly be the ATV's OS (Tiger). It can handle larger files just fine. I wonder if it's a limitation of ol' Crofton?
