For me it’s a hobby and nothing more. I have spent far more time on theology books than on photography. It’s not that I don’t like photography I do it’s just not as important as defending the faith. What about you? Will you spend thousands on gear? Or is it just a hobby?

That’s why I asked. This is a opinion thread.
Yes, and I gave mine :). A better way to say it is that photography is a passion. We can call it a hobby, but for you I’ve always had the impression that you think of “hobby” and “amateur” as “lesser”, so maybe passion has more of an impact. I don’t get paid for it but it’s a big part of who I am.

Out in the world, people I meet tell me I am Blessed. I was Blessed at birth, and that suffices. Others Blessing is from their belief in their Power. Interesting.

Hobby or not - I photograph. I spend as little as possible. I use the gear I have to achieve the photograph I see.

Good because I personally can’t afford more than what I have.

its A passion but not as important as theology.

Lol…. I decline to answer an amount that I have spent on the grounds my wife may see this and I will incriminate myself. Suffice to say my savings would be significantly larger had I had a cheaper hobby. Not just spending on gear, also on trips to far off locations. I live in Scotland but have been lucky enough to have travelled all over the world.

Just a hobby for me too and there is always one more bit of kit I “need” to get my dream setup.

Photography for me is critical for combatting the stress of my career so it is very important for me.

When it comes to faith, I am happy you feel strongly about it but to quote Tom Hanks in Angels and Demons…. “I am yet to receive the gift of faith” I will add though that should I get it as a gift, it better come with a receipt so I can return it in exchange for a new camera.

Passion in the true meaning of the word too right?

Afford suggests you feel you need to spend more. You don’t, It is how you use the tools available to you that matters not how much the tools cost. Morgan cars for example are still made by panel beating on the same railway sleepers (Wooden substructure) that they have used for half a century and they make beautiful cars to rival the technologically advanced manufacturers. Work on your process, on how you apply your tools to the outcome, don’t obsess about the cost. Cost is not really a measure of value.

Don't hobbies cost money. My problem is my hobbies are expensive.

Says who? Why does anything need a limit?
Well considering that some spend thousands on books, I guess that can be justified in photography. My POINT is that to me Photography is no more than a hobby and not as important as books are for me.

That's fine for you, but that might not be another persons point of view. I might think collecting stamps is a waste of time, but that's not for me to judge someone elses hobbies and how they spend their money.

What are your books to you? A hobby? An interest? Much the same thing of course.

My wife spends thousands on amazing books. She loves literature, mostly English. It’s her interest and her hobby collecting beautiful books and reading fantastic minds from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. She loves trolling through used book stores, especially when we are in the UK. Traveling is a hobby, or at least a passion. Costs thousands. Cooking is a hobby of mine. I’ve spent thousands over the years on both equipment and ingredients. Gardening is a hobby of ours. Talk about thousands.

Follow your passion and pay what you pay for your hobbies and interests. Death comes to us all soon enough so engage with the world in a way that lets you shine a little brighter each day. Books for you, photography, traveling, books, cooking, and gardening for me and my family. They all cost. As long as it’s in your budget or you’ve saved for it, what does it matter?
