Heres the situation: i have absolutely no experience coding, developing, etc. however i see the earning potential the iphone app store provides. Seeing as how, i am so far behind the curve regarding code writing, i've come to the conclusion of hiring a professional to create my app. i have recently gotten a quote from one developer in my area, and basically b4 i commit im trying to do some market research.

I realize this may be a personal question, but i was wondering how much any of you would charge to create your app??? if that is too personal a question, how much do you think the average app cost to develop? (my idea is something close to iwant)

in addition one developer i talked to had told me that the waiting list to get an app on itunes is around 3yrs!!! i have searched this forum and another and from what i've gathered the longest wait has been about 5 months, average being about 2 weeks. These wait times are specifically for what? time to be approved for the SDK license? time from completion of app to approval/rejection and up for sale on itunes?

thanks everyone

It's impossible to answer the question without knowing the complexity of the app. Obviously people would charge less for an app that takes a week to write rather than a month or longer.

Speaking personally: an infinite amount. I don't have any time to write the apps I want to, let alone for someone else!

The guy is full of it. If you're a registered developer already you can get a completed app approved for sale in 2 to 7 *days* in most cases...

I've been learning objective-c and cocoa frameworks as I go, but my (now nearly completed, but not yet released) game would have cost someone else over $60K to contract me to develop over the last few months based on my going rate. And I do get my contract rate all the time for my "real job". The iPhone programming is merely a side experiment, if it pans out great, but as robbieduncan says I have too much programming work already.

Fortunately if my first app is unsuccessful it doesn't matter to me financially, the time was well spent learning another new skill.

You aren't going to find a lot of people who will do the job for a set fee. It's usually going to be by the hour. For a competent programmer, you're looking at a minimum $100+ per her. That's probably even too low, but you may get lucky. Independent programmers charge a lot. And they're going to charge you even more, because you're taking away from their time to program their apps.
