How much would you pay?

Mac Pro cylinder. Current base model Quad 3.7 12GB 256 used. Out of warranty. No AppleCare. Not eligible.

No extras.

What is a fair price.

Cosmetic condition appears good from pics. Not seen in person yet.

What would you do to test it? Meet seller at Apple and run diagnostics?

But to answer your question about a fair price, that can be determined by looking at Ebay and seeing what completed auctions sold for. It looks like around $2000 assuming D300 GPUs. There was one outlier at $1700, so I'd guess that one is "good deal" territory.

It sounds like you are buying locally though, and in my experience local prices can vary a LOT.

It is the dual D300s. I checked eBay sold listings. Recent solds around $2,300. The guy was asking $2,200 locally. I thought around $1,700 based on what someone would net after eBay fees etc on a $1,800-2,200 eBay sale. It was bought Feb 2014.

You guys might be willing to pay $900, but I have never seen one go that cheap, and I'm in a solid market (Houston / Dallas - Texas USA). Around $2k seems to be the mark. Possibly worth it if you don't need the GPU power. But yeah, I have mac minis and laptops with Thunderbolt, and would likely pick up a loaded 5,1 for that coin.

The reason that I say 700 to 900 is because 1) it's been 2.5 years at least
2) no warrenty so if graphic problem occurs then what?

@OP I'd probably not go above $1500 or so the computer just isn't that fast and there is no real upgrade path. $1500 buys a whole lotta cMP which will also have no warranty but has at least a limited upgrade path. TBH though unless you need it to make some money you otherwise wouldn't now is just not the time to buy. Your options currently are old and really old both at a fairly high price I'd just hold out until WWDC and see.

Resale value on the nMP is not going to be as good as it was for the chrome model.

While the CPU can be upgraded you are pretty much stuck with the GPU it came with. The connector is proprietary and it's only available as an expensive spare part. If you can find one. Add to that the thermal issues that seem to plague the D700 series and there is little justification for the system to maintain a high resale value. I believe the SSD connector is also proprietary so who knows how long you will be able to get an upgrade?

I see a lot of used nMP 4core/D300 online with an asking price of $2600 which is fairly ridiculous, when you consider the machine costs $2799-2999 new.

I think between $1500-2000 would be a more realistic price for a nMP 4c/D300. The price / performance ratio simply isn't there, especially when you add the new iMac 5k into the equation.
