The last mini I had was the old Plastic Top ones which was pretty quiet how do the current ones compare?

They are still pretty quiet.

My 2.3 i7 is almost silent most of the time. I've only had the fans fire up when I've been converting films with Handbrake and even then it's still not very noisy.

thats good to know they look fantastic now but i thought apple might have sacrificed noise for slim style

I am a nut for silence. Ask any of my friends. And my mini exceeds my expectations! I consider it silent.

Even when I give the fan a boost.

Ditto...I only hear my i7 when using Handbrake, or when my son is playing Mindcraft. Otherwise, it is very quiet.

It's not as quiet as the White ones IMO. Especially when a lot of video activity or multi core activity kicks in, the fans goes much faster than on the core2duo ones. I have the idea the 9400M GPU in my 2009 is passively cooled or so. But HD4000 and 8thread machines are a lot faster! Now you have a Mini that can stand against an iMac. In de Core2Duo era, the Mini's were quite a bit behind the iMacs in power. My Radeon 2011 mini also blows pretty much during a GPU intensive game.

They only make fan noise if you max the CPU. For example using Handbrake. Or as noted, you max the GPU. They're both on the same heat sink cooled by the fan.

The HDD is noisier than the fan running at idle fan speed of 1800 rpm in the base Mac mini, I've replaced it with a SSD.

At 2300 rpm the noise of fan starts to overtake the noise of the HDD.

The server is running at 2300 rpm at idle.

I put WD caviar blacks in my mini's, and i can't hear the drives. The fan is louder than the drive. At 1m I can't hear anything.
