no set rules for me. just whenever.

my first ipad was ipad2, then upgraded to Pro 12.9. wont upgrade now until either the os gets painfully slow or the hardware gets a radical upgrade. and i mean radical.
So in all likelihood, thats me now for a fair few years to come. the current 12.9 is pretty future proof other than hardware gadgets :)

I will probably upgrade my iPad Air 2 in 2 years as I do not imagine it staying smooth for more than another 2 years. iOS 12 will be some readical release with a ton of overhead that the Air 2 will begin to struggle on. I was thinking I would keep my iPad for 5+ years but it seems like 4 will be the sweet spot for me.

iPad 4 (first lightning), iPad Air, iPad Pro 12.9. Only reason 4 then Air was because I needed to give one to my wife, so she got my 4 when I got the Air. Now, I have the Pro, she has the Air and gave the 4 to my parents. Will wait until Pro 2 12.9 or the next before getting another one (depends on new features).

My first was an iPad 3, Followed by an iPad 4 for the wife. Then bought 2 new iPad Air's at release. Kept them for 3 years. Just upgraded to 2 new iPad Pro's 32 gb WiFi Only. Got them for $499.99 each with no tax, free shipping and 12 months same as cash financing. Hoping to keep those for 3 years as well.

1, then mini1, mini2, mini4, pro 12.9
The 1 is packed away, the min1 and mini4 and Pro are used daily, the mini2 in keep charged but only use it occasionally, it may become a home hub.

The latest working iOS on iPad 2 was fast enough for my sister to get introduced to the iPad, it wasn't enough for me anymore. The iPad Air 2 replaced it.

Once the latest OS on it becomes slow, or it has certain damage, I will start saving up for a replacement and wait for Apple to release a worthy replacement.

I have an iPad 3 for my downtime, and I've considered upgrading to a 11" Macbook Air...

I don't recall the time intervals. Have had iPad 1, iPad 4, Air 2. Planning Mini 4 shortly, as a reader, and the next iteration of the 12.9 in 2017.

I bought the iPad 1 and used it randomly and perfectly until about a year ago, not because it stopped working, just because I bought the kids two 2 minis. (2's I think)
I bought the iPad 3 when it came out and still use it all day every day and it still works flawlessly.
Never have had a reason to upgrade any further yet. It works flawlessly and there is not anything I can think of that I am missing.

No set schedule. I upgrade when my current iPad starts feeling slow or there's a feature on the new model that I want, whichever comes first.

My first iPad was an iPad Air, I then sold it to get the iPad Air 2 because of the split screen. Then I sold that to get the iPad Pro because of the Pencil. However, I don't think that there will be a reason for me to upgrade again. Everything is exactly how I want it finally. I'm on no set scedule.

generally, every other generation, but if I can get a good deal, I upgrade immediately.

How often do you upgrade?

I upgrade when there's New Technology. Period. Or scratch that New Innovation. How ?

IPad 1 was just a big iPhone I purchased the 4th Generation iPad Why because.

IPad Gen 1 was just a big iPhone
Gen 2 don't Remeber
Gen 3 Had Retina Display but the same A5 CPU as the Gen 2 so historically the worst iPad
Gen 4 (my baby) Had Lightning cable and a new A6X CPU and Retina Display this was November 2012
Gen 5 Air 1 I was so mad.
Gen 6 iPad Air 2, my Gen 4 was dropped or damaged at the Apple Store worse than it went in. Manager had no units on hand and Upgraded me to a Air 2 on the Spot October 2014. It was like winning the lottery still Remeber what I wore, what I ate that day. A Stale bagel tasted liked roast beef I was so happy.
2015 we won't talk about the year Apple forgot.
2016 March 31 Got a new iPad Pro 9.7 LTE sold my Air 2 for $300 cash right before the new 9.7 Launched
2017, Who Cares the 9.7 Pro crushes everything still No Major updates Expected that matter.
2018, Intel Powered iPad Pros with Smart Connector 2 and some type of Touch Bar Smart Keyboard And Run Mac OS. And 1 USB-C Port. To charge do everything. Maybe OLED displays and new body design.

Starting with Gen 4 I am on a Tic-toc pattern. Apple makes big leaps every two years.

Finally someone that understands Apples tick tock pattern in terms of spec upgrades. Although your arguments were alittle off. The 2017 will see a Air 3 and Pro 2's with A10X. Hmm I can only fathom what power the A11X will hold. Apple is slaying the SOC designs these days. OG Air 2 ftw though.

Whenever I want to.

iPad 1 (32GB cellular) -> iPad 3 (32GB cellular) -> iPad mini (32GB wifi) -> iPad mini retina (32GB cellular) -> iPad Pro 9.7 (32GB cellular)

My current Mini 4 is my first and only iPad. I will upgrade when I feel there's something worthwhile. If a Mini 5 or "Mini Pro" is released in 2017 and I think it offers worthwhile improvements I might upgrade. I may even go for a 9.7" model. It depends on what's offered. I don't have a specific plan to wait a certain amount of years.

I used to upgrade every year until the 4 came out just six months after the 3. I kept that until I could no longer the lag of the 3 and got an Air 2. I'll be keeping this one until a new iPad can "wow" me or the Air 2 starts to lag.
