Please see the attached images. My friend insisted that he only had 'Google' as a bookmark and now it appears like the screenshot. Even moreso, he doesn't sync to a computer anymore.

This is how Safari looks on my Apple and I sync every night and it ignores my bookmark preferences, leaving the marketing bookmarks.

Is this a conspiracy or what?!

I have no such bookmarks on my phone, nor has Apple ever added a bookmark to my phone. I don't know what your friend did to his phone, but I doubt Apple had anything to do with it.

Can you explain why I just told iTunes to replace bookmarks on iPhone and they remained untouched?

I think you have to manually erase the ones that come on the phone. Syncing just adds to them, it doesn't take those original ones away.

Did you manually erase them on the phone and they came back? Or did you just never erase them in the first place?

My friend manually erased and they reappeared. I just deleted them manually and will report back. I suspect that they are restored the same way Apple updates Javascript Security. Powered and Safari open connected to WiFi.

Are the bookmarks you're saving on your Mac in your Bookmarks Bar or Bookmarks Menu? There's seperate folders for all bookmarks from your computer in the bookmarks menu on your phone.

Up above what you have posted in the screenshot should be History, Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu folders. Check in those.

Did your friend recently restore his phone?

I was having some performance issues lately and restored my iPhone to new...and those bookmarks showed up. I think it's just part of the software.

I delete them from the phone and they stay gone.

+1

I experience and am aware of this. He 'claims' that he deleted them and never restored.
