How long do you think it will take movies, such as the following, to hit ATV (is there usually a long wait)?

-No Country for Old Men
-I am Legend
-National Treasure

Also, will they be offered in Hi-Def (at least 720P), or does ATV pretty much limit everything to 480? I have a 50mbps fibre connection, so downloading HD wouldn't be a problem.

I was thinking of purchasing a BR player (probably a PS3, as I've heard Sony/Samsung low-end players are problematic) and currently have the aforementioned BR movies on pre-order. But if I could just buy a ATV and download them, I'd save a lot of cash.

Apple says 30 days, but as has been posted here that is not always true. Some movies show up right away. Also, the HD movies are 720p.

Would you say that most movies aren't HD? I mean, not that I'd need to watch "The English Patient" in HD, but it would at least be nice if the major action flicks were HD. I know on Xbox Live, nearly all new releases are HD, and most of all action flicks as well.

RIght now, the movie studios are dragging their feet on releasing movies for rental to iTunes. I don't think they want Apple to repeat the success they had with music, ad they move into movies.

The Apple TV has rekindled my interest in renting movies, and I would prefer to do that on the Apple TV. It's hard though when I know the movie is out on DVD, and I could go pick it up at the Video store...

New releases seem to be very slow in coming. They got a few, Michael Clayton, ..., but if you think about it, there have been many new movies released on dvd 30-90 days ago that have not showed up (allowing for the 30 day window). I am curious to see once we pass the 30 day mark of this thing being live if we will see all top movies that came out 30 days prior showing up on the apple tv? if they can keep up with all new releases i will be happy, i can deal with growing pains on the back catalog, but so far there has been nothing to suggest that will be the case.

I honestly think a lot of this is due to how long it is going to take them to get digital copies uploaded the first time. New movies they can take in as soon as they are available if they want, but older ones they will have a backlog on.

"No country for Old Men" is available on iTunes (it was just released to DVD today). Does this mean it's on AppleTV? Can someone check? Thanks.

Good news on No Country. The next 30-60 days will be the real test for apple tv. there are a lot of big movies coming out on dvd. If they keep up with these new releases (at least within the 30 day window) then it will look good. There isn't much I really want to see among the choices right now, but keeping up with this list would change that for me. Some of the big movies already released in march and coming out in march/april include:

No Country for Old Men (looks like they may have it)
I Am Legend
Atonement
Enchanted
Juno
Into the Wild
There Will Be Blood
Sweeney Todd
National Treasure 2
The Golden Compass
Bee Movie
Before the Devil Knows Your Dead
Things We Lost in the Fire
Dan in Real Life
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Resurrecting the Champ
Walk Hard

Why can't they post a calendar of the release date of the "new arrivals" a-la a movie rental store?

Probably because they don't know for sure and don't want to get burned by "promising" something and not delivering. This has already happened by the promise to have 1000 titles by the end of February. It is clear that Apple does not control this issue, the studios and rights holders do. As long as they delay giving Apple permission to post movies, the longer we wait for the library to grow. I suspect it will happen, just not as quickly as the customers and Apple would like.
