I was shown a stock 4GB Edge iPhone but instead of the silver colored metal case it was solid black (with the silver Apple logo).

I hadn't heard of this version of iPhone. Where a few manufactured like this before the 3G was introduced?

That would be very rare. I have never ever seen a black 4GB iPhone. I had the aluminium 2G iPhone and it's the 1st generation model. Where did you come across this black 4GB iPhone? Any pictures to share?

Looks pretty nice. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen it before though..

I've heard of the plastic 3G iPhones being painted but not the first generation phones. (I'm sure it can be done though.)

The seller has owned the phone since new and doesn't reference painting it, rather he simply states it is "rare" for being black.

Stranger things have happened on eBay, for sure, but does seem interesting.

This seems like housing has been modified, not random iPhone Apple let slip.

I put a hello kitty sticker on my phone, so now I have a rare iPhone with hello kitty sticker on it. How much is it worth?

You can order custom painted housings for your iPhone and install them yourself. These black housings were offered up and sometimes they even came with all the buttons already installed and everything. The only thing you had to do is plug it in and snap it on.

I guess you could say it's rare, but it's not authentic.

It's either colorware or a 3rd party back...

IIRC there was a company selling black replacement backs for the original iPhone, that's probably what that is if it isn't a colorware job.

I'm actually hoping the next gen iPhone switches back to an aluminum casing, and I hope it comes in black and white aluminum. And the piece of black rubber on the bottom should be silver or white on the black iPhone and black on the white iPhone.

the aluminum casing sounds nice....but everything else...no

I asked the question through the eBay system to the seller if the phone is original and he responded to me, "the back was professionally replaced".

the 4gb black iphone on ebay has a faulty lcd at the top of the lcd a group of lines which are usually caused by impact. so have good think about purchasing because i wouldnt like that on my iphone.

Yes. But that would affect the iPhone's reception. Anything with aluminium on it. When I used my 2G, sure, the aluminium back felt nice. But my reception was worse than my 3G and current 3GS. It's the aluminium that makes a difference in call reception issues.
