1. Should I update in iTunes using the "check for updates" button and then download the firmware and jailbreak it then restore with that jailbroken version?
2. Should I download the firmware, jailbreak it, then restore in iTunes skipping the official 3.0 version?

Would there be any benefits of doing one over the other? I have been jailbroken for a little over a month but haven't run into a firmware update so I wasn't sure how those typically are done. Thanks in advance for the help!

Probably doing the jailbreak and restoring from that would be best, don't you think? That would cut a step out where I wouldn't need to update in iTunes, then jailbreak and restore.

So it would basically go:
1. Wait for 3.0 to release.
2. Wait for PwnageTool 3.0 to release.
3. Download the 3.0 package from Apple's servers.
4. Jailbreak it with PwnageTool and get the custom package out of that.
5. Restore in iTunes with the Option+Click "check for updates" to select the custom package.

so we should not try and jailbreak yet? Wait until they release quickpwn 3.0 (which is not out yet)?

Also, I have never RE-Jailbroken before, How do I make it so everything on my phone is the same as it was before (contacts, games, apps, settings etc)?

well u can already update to 3.0 even tho i suggest a restore cuz the phone tends to get slow after a while (dont forget to make a backup and put it back on after)

for quickpwn u usually need to be on the latest firmware anyway so its save to be on 3.0 already.

Wait, so we CAN jailbreak with 3.0 now?

So I just sync & back up.

Restore, rejailbreak to 3.0 then sync up with the old back up and everything will be the same?

That's not what he meant.

The 3.0 jailbreak will be released in the next couple days. So you can either update to 3.0 now but lose the jailbreak until the jailbreak comes out, or just wait till the jailbreak comes out and do it all at once. Either way you'll end up with jailbroken 3.0 with all your settings (except for the jailbreak ones - you have to redo those yourself).

if i just wait till the jailbreak comes out and do it all at once, will i really loose and have to redo the jailbreak ones?
isnt this the better way to update if you want a jailbroken 3.0 iphone?
