The reason I ask is, I am currently eyeing a 4th gen 12.9 iPad Pro 256 GB w/ cellular and magic keyboard for $600. I'm not sure if it's a steal, considering the new Pros will be out in a few weeks and all the old models will go down in price eventually.

Depends what price the new models are. So far Apple has kept US pricing constant but bumped up overseas pricing on new models (e.g. price of iPhone 14 Pro = iPhone 13 Pro on launch in US, but iPhone 14 Pro > iPhone 13 Pro on launch in Europe).

Is 4th gen the one with the A12X? If so, I think getting the 5th gen/M1 version is a sensible minimum for now as the M1 looks like it is going to be a big cut-off point for features and support in the future.

This is where I am.
Updated 11 Pro has to get WIFI 6E and an updated pure black LCD, either miniLED or OLED. Or I'm just gonna do the last gen M1.
M1 seems like it will be a cutoff going into future features.
