I have an iPad 7 and like the design. Been looking to pull the trigger on a 9 since they're on sale and is really everything I want. But if they keep the same design another year with the headphone jack and home button, I'll get the 10 since it will probably have a faster chip and be supported longer.

Considering I bought my 7 two months before the 8 was released, I don't want to make that mistake again. But if they're going to a new design with the 10 where they take features away, eh... I'll buy the 9.

No one knows until Apple announces it.

You could always buy the 9 on discount or from the refurb store after the 10 comes out and you don’t like the design. I got the 8th gen from the refurb store a while back and I’m very happy with it.

We really don't know. But if you like the "classic" design of the 7th thru 9th gens (as I do), then why NOT buy the 9th gen if you can get it on sale? "longer support" doesn't seem like it would factor into the equation for you since you are looking to upgrade so soon after buying the 7.

My somewhat reliable source told me that the 10th gen will be a departure from the 7th-9th design. How much different I don't know. But I DO know that I really prefer this design and I bought the 9th gen believing it would be the last of this form-factor.

If it is, great. If not... great, I'll buy the 10th when the 11th gen is rumored to be released. :D

Wait for the 10. Just the a14 and most likely more ram make it a much better buy. The screen may improve as well to a laminated display but no one knows until Apple releases it.

I would hate to buy a 9 and then a few months later a major redesign is released that has a better screen and is faster and looks better or at least like it didn’t come out a decade ago.

Also resale value for 9th gen will tank when 10 is released if there is a major redesign. Something to consider.

Yeah probably what I'll end up doing.

Yup. Likely the best course of action.
Longevity does matter to me. The only reason I'm looking to upgrade so soon from my 7 is because I bought the base 7 on a whim, not sure if I'd even keep it or what I would use it for. Now that I know what I use an iPad for, I realize I need more storage space and a better front camera. But I don't want to lose the home button or headphone jack; which I use for my lav mic when vlogging. Not that I couldn't use that with a lightening adapter, but it's nice to have the sturdier 3.5mm jack.

Honestly I don't really care about any of that. I like the design of my 7 and don't see any issue with the screen at all. Even the A10 processor seems to best fast enough. I've never had any issue running anything I needed to run. Feel super peppy. Nor is resale value a concern for me. I don't resell my stuff anymore. I still have and use my Macbook from 2010.
What is most important to me is the home button, a good front camera, and a headphone jack, since I use it for my lav mic for vlogging. Other than that, my iPad is mostly used for video conferencing and reading ebooks. ass well as the occasional Youtube, email, and web browsing. When I first got it I played one game on it for a bit and that was it. Never any performance issues with that.

Then there should be deals on the 9th gen particularly in November during Turkey day or even during labor day coming up.

I really miss headphone 🎧 jack. I hate they did it just to sell wireless.

Wait until the iPad10 is released and decide then. You can always buy a refurbished or discounted iPad 9 if the design changes.
