How the 11.6 should look like

that's stupid, then there would be no difference with the 13 in... The more logical thing Apple would do is start to reduce those borders and just make a smaller 11.6 in laptop ... when they can do it. As the previous poster mentioned, there is "weight/cost/technical/physical limitation" currently.

remember you have to make sure the lid would hold the screen in place without getting damaged and securely... adding more screen space is not an easy solution.... remember at those edges the antenna are around the edges as well as the magnets used to close the lid.

They need to have enough support for the screen and they must have determined they need that gap to maintain rigidity on the lid of the uni-body.
They only other way is to brace the lid with a front bezel like the mbp but of course that adds weight.
I think if apple could do it they would have by now with their revisions.
The comment about the the 13" being defunct with this re-design is crazy. The 13" would become 14" and that would seriously satisfy people who really want a 15" mba.

Aesthetically the rim on the Air is one of the things that I like the least. but I am sure it has to do with the rigidity and the viability of having such a small screen.
+1; I believe it just a physical compromise between the desired shape of the lid vs. the needs of the display.
Yeah - had it been 16:10, the 11-inch would have 860 pixels in vertical direction - instead it has only 768 which is even less than white MB and 13-inch MBP (don't even get me started on the latter). The 11-inch was out of question in my case mostly for that reason. Had the 11-inch been 1376x860, I might have considered it - esp. since the SSD can be changed after purchase.

The 11-inch having a 16:9 screen is one of the main reasons I am getting it over the 13-inch, but it seems most people dislike it.
Oh? May I ask why is that? I'm just a bit curious. Is it because you're going to watch movies or what?

Primarily because I'll be doing a bunch of movie watching, yes. That was the main factor in wanting a 16:9 screen.
I should add that I'm a writer and this will be my first Mac. I went to the Apple store last week and played with the Airs just to make sure 11 inches wouldn't be too small. I found it to be perfect, and liked the 16:9 screen as well. I only played with the 13-inch for 5 minutes or so.
But I can see why people dislike it.

Yeah, I thought something similar a while ago. You could technically fit the 13in panel on the 11in lid, if you just go by measurements alone... which would make one friggin' awesome laptop!
BUT! It's obviously a lot more complicating than that, as others have pointed out. Structural integrity is a huge factor, with other components taking up space as well (i.e. the camera). Also, I'm not sure if the MBA does this - but I know a lot of other laptops do - the lid is where the antennas are located for Wi-Fi and what not. I'm not too sure how long or big they are, but again, that's something to factor in. And of course there's other technical hurdles to over come... but by golly, it would be a damn near perfect laptop!

I would usually agree with anyone saying 16:10 > 16:9, but in this particular case I have to say this:
If you want 16:10, go for MBA 13". The 11" and 13" are almost the same width, it's just that the 13" has a lot more depth. That's why its screen has more height, and hence 16:10. It's just a taller screen, basically.
The 11" MBA couldn't have a 16:10 screen cuz it has to be a certain width for the keyboard to stay full size.
But I really dislike them making the 27" screens 16:9 instead of 30" 16:10.
This can actually go both ways. But it doesn't apply to the cases where the computer is to be used mostly on the road or in other situations where external monitors can't be used.
