How the hell do you exit search in Mail???

Am I the only who find this frustrating? Allow me to explain.

Every time you do a search (option command f and then start typing), your inbox goes away and the filtered list appears. Of course that is expected. Now, what if you are done with the search, what do you do? Right now, I have to:

1) click the cross in the search bar
2) click the inbox email list to give it focus
3) fn + arrow up to go to the top of the inbox (alternatively click on the grey bar at the top)

Really Apple? 3 steps just to going back to see my new email? I do roughly 50 searches a day on average so that means there are 150 redudent actions a day.

How does everyone else do this?

Are you referring to the search box in the upper right ?

If so just click on the "X"

Just quit Mail and reopen it. There you go, one step.

I'm booted into Snow Leopard right now but doesn't your TAB key take you to the inbox, then one more time to the list of mail there?

Technically that is two steps.

1. Quit Mail
2. Open Mail

It goes to the inbox, with your last searched mail selected. Now how do you see your new incoming mail?

Your incoming mail should be at the top of the list, so just scroll up (or press Home).

Edit: But I think I see what you're getting at; when you finish searching it doesn't restore the "state" that you were in before starting a search.

Push the Home button and go straight to the top.

Since you searched and selected an email canceling search doesn't un-select the email and auto select the email at the top. This would cause you to lose your found/highlighted email.

I want the search result to remain selected when I cancel search so I can see emails that came right before or after that may or may not be related in some way but not in the search query. This is far more intuitive than the selection jumping around after canceling search. Also when searching other folders and you cancel search do you want it to go to the top of this list or to the top of the inbox? See how this could be confusing.

Mail has never "restored to the state before searching".
