How to access the phone app or hangup?

Sometimes when I am on a call, I don't see the hang up red icon so how do I go back to the phone app which shows that menu so I can hang up?

The red "end call" button should always be present when you're on a call. If it doesn't appear "sometimes" because of a bug or glitch you should be able to bring up the task manager and "close" the phone app. That should end the call but I'd definitely look into why you are seeing this anomaly rather than looking for a work around. Try restarting your phone. You'd be surprised how many glitchy things get fixed simply by restarting.

I was assuming you knew what the green bar was for before I replied

You can end the call by simply pressing wake/power button. That's how I end my call. I don't even have to look at my phone to hit the red end button.
