How to achieve this look?

Guys, please have a look at these 2 profiles on Instagram. I particularly find their style similar and I like it a lot. The thing is I tried to create a similar look pretty much as a test to myself to see if I could and I failed. I've used all VSCO presets, tweaked them, tried myself to create one and failed.

Please don't think of this as me trying to copy, but as I try to get better as a photographer and as an editor I like to learn all techniques available, perhaps maybe I could use a "similar" look to some of my photos as I think these don't look good on all type of photos..

When I look at these photos its even hard to put into words.. they seem to have their blacks faded, while at the same time they have great colors but faded as well and good contrast. All the photos seems to be under cloudy skies lol..

I have been messing with my pictures, they are great images in those instagram feeds. Especially Jayscale

I kind of got the look from

-42 Vibrance
+34 Clarity
-34 Contrast

in Lightroom.

He takes really great photos but I still don't think his style is too similar to the ones I posted. Some of his images gets close but still not there yet. LoL

I'm very familiar with my camera and settings.

This look is pure color correction and post processing. This is so obvious it's ridiculous.

Yeah that Jayscale guy is using a 5D MkIII and a 50/1.2 lens so I think that guy who was shouting was saying these photos weren't taken on a phone.

If you have the VSCO Film Pack #6 for LR have you tried the Portra 800 Night as your base for tweaking?

I just had a look at my VSCO presets and it's actually the Provia 400X+1 Night preset that gives it that cold dark clinical look. It helps if the skies are overcast as well. Whatever color you want to make dark/black just use the sliders in HSL or Color.

Love these VSCO presets, they save me a lot of time.

I only looked at the first one, if you go to his website and run the pic through an exif viewer it will reveal every setting...all done in LR btw ;)

Awesome. I will try today. I finally have a day off and will play with my images :)

Edit - Yep.. that's the closest I got, the rest is just a matter of tweaking here and there and of course the weather. Most of their photos like I said are under cloudy skies and for a very long time... (this was my fault) I thought the cloudy skies were bad for photography. That changed recently though.

I tend to edit everything in VSCOcam these days because I'm absolutely in love with VSCO's filters, they're gorgeous and they can be so easily tweaked to make them your own too. They also just added a Clarity tool which basically removed my need to even use Lightroom - I can do everything on my iPad. Though I did look into the VSCO Lightroom presets, but they all seemed somewhat overpriced. I saw they're doing a 4 year anniversary sale right now, so I might have to look into it. My main issue is that there's too many sets and they're all expensive, so I'd have to choose just one.

VSCOcam for iOS gives you all of VSCO's filters but totally free and I find portable editing to be much more convenient than being tied to Lightroom on my MacBook Pro. I took my iPad mini abroad with me and edited everything on there with VSCOcam, worked like a dream. I understand the Lightroom presets they sell are slightly different, if not very, very overpriced. My main issue with places 'selling' Lightroom presets is the fact you know you're paying stupid money for something that was achieved with simple slider values in Lightroom which you could easily replicate yourself - if you knew the values they used. Makes it hard for me to lay down money for them, with that in mind. I had a go playing with Lightroom sliders a while ago to try and achieve some of the same effects I get in VSCOcam...eventually got bored and just went back to VSCO. ;-)

Guys. VSCO packs are down to $59 each right now. If you are considering getting them, now is likely the time.
