Whenever I try to add a new calendar account on iPhone or MacBook using iOS 18.x or macOS 15.x, it gives prompt to choose any of the cloud based accounts.
Is it possible to add a local device based calendar which is not connected to any cloud based account, and also include that local calendar in the iCloud backup taken from the apple device.

Theoretically possible, I suppose… disable the cloud accounts, add a local calendar, re-enable cloud accounts.

The question “why” comes to mind, but I’ve (almost) learned not to ask because the answers make no sense… 😉

The "why" is because I want to reproduce the option of backup of "Calendar" to iCloud, apart from the iCloud option of "iCloud Calendar".
Earlier the option "iCloud calendar" appeared along with option "Calendar" in iOS Settings > [Apple ID] > Saved to iCloud.
But since sometime, the option "Calendar" has spontaneously stopped showing there and only the option "iCloud calendar" is showing.

I tested as you advised and the local calendar got created. But further it did not cause the "Calendar" option to appear.

"Calendar" option where?

Never mind, just saw your intervening post. "iOS Settings > [Apple ID] > Saved to iCloud" - I don't see this setting. Can you provide a screenshot?

And again never mind, I see what you're talking about - "Settings > [Apple Account] > iCloud > Saved to iCloud > See All"

You won't see locally-backed-up calendars there, only iCloud calendars. To see information in the backup, look at:

Settings > [Apple Account] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > "This iPhone". I would expect Calendar to be in there, if it's being backed up. I don't actually use a local calendar so can't validate it.

Screenshot of the "Calendar" option and "iCloud calendar" option are attached. The "Calendar" option appears in the same screen as "iCloud calendar", but in the separate group along with toggle buttons for "Books", "Maps", "Music", "Weather" etc. While the "iCloud calendar" option appears along with option for "Health", "Messages in iCloud", "Notes" etc.
The other toggle buttons are masked.
These screenshots were taken at an earlier point of time (on iOS 18 in beginning of October 2024), but am unable to reproduce again.

Sounds like they fixed a bug then. It wouldn’t make sense to put a Calendar on that screen if it isn’t an iCloud calendar.

I don’t think they fixed any bug. It still remains my guess.
That toggle is likely gone because I had deleted a few calendars from my Calendar app in last few days. But I fail to recollect how were those calendars added in first place.
