I used to have my own music library on my iPhone before I subscribed to Apple Music. All I used to do was drag and drop an MP3 to iTunes while my phone was connected, and the song would show up on the Music app. However, when I got Apple Music, it came with iTunes Match and iCloud Music Library, so my local song collection was uploaded to the cloud automatically.

Now though, I need to add some of my own MP3 songs to my phone which don't exist on Apple Music. And I cannot for the life of me figure it out. When I connect my phone to my Mac and go to Finder > iPhone > Music, all it says is:

You can play and download songs on all your devices. To sync music from this computer, turn off Cloud Music Library.

I don't want to sync anything. I just want to copy an MP3 to my phone so I can play it alongside my Apple Music collection. If I turn off iCloud Music Library, it will remove my entire music collection from my phone and I'll have to re-download it again.

Urgh this is such a pain. I have done this numerous times and each time a new song comes out which isn’t on Apple Music I have to do it again.

Firstly, make a playlist on iTunes of the songs you want to sync to your iPhone so you can which to sync

then turn off iCloud music library on your iPhone. Now sync your iPhone to iTunes so that only that playlist syncs. Then unplug your iPhone and turn on iCloud music library. BUT say keep existing library/songs, so not delete them.

now you have your music + everything from Apple Music will be restored
