How to add non bluetooth external mouse

I got a wireless USB mouse for my MBP but when I plug it in nothing happens, and when I went to the System Preferences I was not able to find anything on how to do it. Any suggestions?
If it is a basic thing, I apologize, I am a total newb to Apples

I had a Kensington and sometimes I had to press a "sync" button on the mouse (and/or unplug the receiver). Once recognized, it worked fine.
