Does anyone know how to adjust the size of the preview images in Finder in Sierra?

You used to be able to do this with status bar, but not anymore?

If I understand your question correctly, all you have to do (when you're in icon view) is adjust the slider at the lower right corner of the screen.

That adjustment tool is to change the size of icons, (and icon previews) in finder windows, but has no effect on the size of images, other than the icons for those image files.

OP - if you want to change the size of a quick look image (select the file, then press the space bar for that quick look image in the finder), then just grab and drag the corner of the window to resize the image. Any of the four corners will allow resize. Or, grab and drag an edge or top/bottom to resize to a more limited point. Corners work the easiest.
Of course, open the file in the Preview app (or your choice of image editing app) to actually edit your image.

You understand my question correctly, but there is no slider in the status bar on Sierra. Or at least, I can't find one.

hmm...
Open your finder window.
Make sure that window is in Icon view (View menu, Show as Icons.)
In that same View menu, click Show Status Bar.
If you don't see that, but says Hide Status bar, click that anyway, the choice will toggle to Show Status Bar, so click that now.
You should see the slider in the bottom right corner, as shown in post #2 above.

OK, So that works. But I'm trying to reduce the size of the preview image in the columns view. I'd like the image to be small enough that I can read the file size and modification date below it without having a really tall window.

Ah, OK, different.
I have never found column view useful, but I understand that some may prefer columns for some tasks.

So, I looked around a little.
Looks like there's one way to make the image smaller, with a less-tall pane for that.
You can resize by dragging the right edge in or out.
You can make the pane shorted by dragging the bottom of the window up, until you have the shorted pane that you want.
Don't know if you appreciate making the entire window shorter, but that's how you make that preview pane shorter - if that's all you need :D

I am trying to make the whole window shorter to deal with the limited screen space of my new 2015 MacBook pro. I was a happy 17" user, but, well, anyway...

Resizing the window or the pain, I just can't seem to make the image as small as I'd like, as small as I remember it being on my old computer with El Capitan, and so the Finder windows are larger on a smaller monitor.
