Is it fine to rub the smudges off the screen using a cloth? (I normally use the piece of paper that the MacBook came with, placed between the screen and keyboards.. I used both the rough and smooth surfaces of the paper)..

I just had to remove some smudges from the screen by rubbing them away, I didn't use any liquids.. is my coating damaged by any chance? And is it really necessary to have this coating? What will happen if all of the coating is removed?

"I just had to remove some smudges from the screen by rubbing them away, I didn't use any liquids"

DON'T DO THIS !!! (shouting intentional)

The anti-glare coating is a VERY thin layer of particles that is "sprayed on" over the surface of the display.

Just about anything that touches it has the potential to wear it down.

You should endeavour not to get the screen dirty in the first place.
Avoid touching it while opening/closing the lid.

If there's dust on it, use a soft cloth to "dust it away" without pressure.

if something's on it that won't dust off, use a cloth moistened with a little water and AS LITTLE PRESSURE AS POSSIBLE to dislodge it.
Then, dust dry.

That's the best one can do...

If you don't see rub marks you're ok. If you see rub marks, they are likely permanent.
Do you think I have weakened the coating though? But I mean smudges have to be rubbed off, I thought everyone did it this way

You may have rubbed some coating off. But if you can't see it it is ok. Just don't rub with abrasive (e.g., paper) again. Apple provides good instructions on how to clean the screen. Follow those as infrequently as possible. The less you touch the screen the better.

Alternatively, you can use products specifically designed for cleaning computer screens (again, infrequently).

Do you know if the previous models all had the same type of coating as the newer models? Specifically, the old MacBook Air with big white bezels

This exactly is the reason why macbook pro is my first and last notebook. The screen is permanently dirty. Closing the lid is getting all the dust and dirtiness to the screen and cleaning the screen is damaging the coating. Wtf is this lol? Machine for 3.5k where i cant even clean screen without worrying :) and i cant even clean the keyboard as it is all the time active and apple wont let me disable it for cleaning purpose ...on my previous 5k imac i never had this. The screen was clean all the time.
