how to backup mixed drive (ssd+hdd) configuration?

I have a macbook pro, early 2011, with Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

The OS is on a 256GB ssd on the main bay, and the older 500gb hdd is in the optical bay.

I am trying to choose between implementing a 'fusion' system, or to simply move some of the user folders to the HDD and keep symlinks in the ssd.

Seems like one issue effects my choices: how to back up such a system.
Normally I use Carbon Copy Cloner.
I have not gone to use Time Machine.

But with either method, how can I take backups of an ssd+hdd combination system (either with fusion, or with symlinks)?
I have been told the symlink method causes problems for either of the above when trying to reboot from the backup.

Are these drives raided? Concentrated disk set?

There is a method of moving the whole user account to another drive without sym links.
In System Preferences > Users & Groups, right-click on the User account. (You may need to unlock first.) There is an "Advanced options" option. In there, you can set the location of the User account.

Note that if OS X can't find a user account in the place it is expecting, (either the default location, or the new one), then it will create a set of empty folders, and it will be as if all your files and settings have disappeared.

I think you can set Time Machine to include another hard drive. Externals are excluded by default, but you can remove them from the Exclude list.

Personally, I would recommend Fusion. It's brilliant.

I'll second the use of Fusion Drive. It was a breeze to set up and, once working, really does act as one fast drive.

Once your drives are fused, they backup via CCC just as one volume would.

as I don't know what "raided? Concentrated disk set?" mean, I suppose the disks are neither

@benwiggy, yes, I read about moving the whole home folder. I thought about it, but then people kept writing that I would lose some of the advantage of having an SSD as the library and cache files would move to the HDD. that's why I considered symlinks for only the user folders like documents/music/downloads/etc...

i am barely comfortable to use Terminal when I read exact instructions. I found tutorials for the symlinks.

any suggestions for a good tutorial for someone at my level to setup the 'fusion'?

@chipviev, the guy made the same comment about CCC when I asked him in that link above. That's good news. I am just trying to make sure I don't fall into a loophole somewhere.
