I have been using the Adblock extension to block all ads but it doesn't seem to work anymore. When watching youtube or CNN, there are always 30 second ads being played before the actual video. Is there any way to block these ads for good? If anyone knows a way, please let me know. Thanks!

I find this highly annoying as well.
I'm not sure these will be blockable, but if they are then the adware blockers will be on top of it quickly. This appears to be a brand-new tactic where an ad is shown before the desired content.
For now, I find that if I mash the reload button a few times, I get to the desired content fairly quickly.
Give the blocker guys/gals a few days to analyze this approach and to come up with an update. It's only been a week or so since I saw this first appear.

I agree, it's quite annoying. Sometimes I'll forego watching the content I wanted to see, just so I don't have to be subjected to the ridiculous ads. Refreshing a few times sometimes is a workaround. If I'm determined to see the content, I'll mute the audio and scroll the page so I can't see the ad content until it's over. I'm very annoyed at advertisers trying to shove their pervasive ads down my throat.
These embedded ads have been around for a long time... certainly well over a year.
No. Youtube delivers the ad in front of the video and there's no way to block them.
You should also keep in mind advertising is what keeps most free websites online. Sites like MacRumors depend on ads to pay for their infrastructure and staff.
Yes ads are annoying but how would you feel if your fave sites became pay only (so they didn't need ads) or disappeared forever?
I think you'd be amazed how much it costs to run a site like even MR.
We're talking about suppressing embedded video ads on sites like CNN and YouTube, not ads that appear on MR. You can still support MR without the annoying ads by contributing directly to the site.
Sites like CNN and YouTube still need to make money to exist. Google has proven they have no problem retiring unprofitable services. If YouTube started losing billions of dollars a year it wouldn't be around for very long.
I was just giving the MR example to try and drive home the message.
You can't block video ads because the advertising is embedded within the delivery of video content. I personally think it's a good thing too.
If by embedded you mean pre-roll, then this is the very first I've seen of them on youtube.

Such sites aren't going to starve to death if some users prefer to block those ads. Enough people don't block them that, obviously, such sites are doing quite well without all of us having to be subjected to inane advertisements.
Yep, they've been around on YouTube and other sites for a long time. I guess it depends on which videos you watch, whether you encounter them or not.
The best results I get with AdGuard, you should try it. I don’t see any ads on YouTube anymore, aside from an occasional glitch for a few seconds.
I read that other browsers like Chrome and Firefox allow extensions to execute code at a different level/point and prevent the ads from showing more effectively. Using another browser for just these websites might thus be an option.
With Google you rarely get a choice. It’s ads or it’s adblock. Websites like Vimeo offer premium accounts to their users, just like Spotify does for music. If Google thinks that this avenue is not worth considering then it’s their loss. Adblockers are a part of the web now and nothing is as annoying as content-blocking ads.

Name one adblocker that will block embedded video ads on YouTube or CNN. I have several, and none of them block that type of ad.
For example, name one adblocker that will block the ad at the beginning of this video without blocking the entire video.
I’m using AdGuard and Ghostery. I don’t see any ads there. Then again, I’m not in the US.
These video ads likely require very specific algorithms, which is probably why they are not used on every website. Decent adblockers should at least block ads on YouTube, I haven’t seen any in months. When I used Internet Explorer on a Windows 10 beta, I immediately noticed them again.
Have you tried using Chrome or Firefox with the same extensions?

I looked at the page for Adguard, and it specifically said it blocks YouTube video ads, so I downloaded it.
Yep, it's working. Yesssssss.....
I also run Ghostery and sometimes JavaScript Blocker. Those were effective on blocking the CNN pre-roll ad - I didn't need to install Adguard to block it.

I've placed this in my HOSTS file and it seems to remove most, if not all youtube ads. I found this somewhere here on this site about 6 months ago.

If you read the title of this thread, you'll see we are discussing blocking ads on Safari, not Firefox.
I mentioned Ghostery just in case. Not sure whether it actually blocks ads, but it could indirectly do so by blocking the imbedded code that inserts the ads.
