I'm not sure but I think there might be a speck of dust on my lens. How can I check to be sure?

I like to hold mine underwater (in the tub or toilet will do) and if the water starts to turn brown then it's probably too dusty.

What did you do?

Burning Man

I went out to the playa about 5pm in the middle of a whiteout. I pulled out the camera on the right as the storm was starting to pass so I could take a time lapse of the sunset. The camera on the right came out about a half an hour later for shots of the Man.

The Man finally fell about 11pm or so. That's a good six hours of playa dust. I looked even worse as I had walked a half hour through the storm to get to the Man. ;)

I hope it was worth it. I know pro bodies and lenses are sealed, but there are limits.

I've been happy with the images coming off of the cameras. The storage cards were pristine and didn't have a single speck of dust. I'll be running everything through a vinegar and water spa day this weekend and will open them up for a look inside after that.

I definitely work my gear hard but it has been very reliable to date. :)

At this point I'd be inclined to take them through the car wash. Go for the luxury wash with the tri-coloured foam and shine guard.

How was Burning Man? I'm not sure what to make of that whole thing other than the obviously great photo ops.

Hope you got some good shots that we'll see.

It was my first burn and it is very hard to describe. The first thing that got me was the scale. I knew it was big but I still wasn't prepared for the reality.

When the Man burned it was a wall of sound. Everybody was about 500 feet back and then there was a double ring of art cars around that. Some of these art cars had sounds systems that cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. It was just a wall of sound from every direction.

By contrast the temple burn the following night had tens of thousands of people sitting around it in complete silence. It was very moving.

I would recommend everybody go at least once.

Picks will follow in a few weeks. I have to process them and send them in for approval. I went the official route and got a media pass. Otherwise you are only supposed to use the pics to show friends and family. Personally I think they have overstepped the line on their restrictions but it isn't too onerous so it isn't a battle I'm interested in fighting. ;)

I only did five or six setups including two time lapse sequences. Even so I am really happy with the results and should have at least a dozen winners. I will definitely be posting some here in the coming weeks.

Look forward to seeing them.

That stuff is rather caustic. You mentioned vinegar, so you're on the right track. But don't go overboard; it can eat stuff too. Dusting really well, and using some compressed gas first is a good idea.

And don't forget your camera bag, lens cases, etc. They can hold that powder for a long time and keep recontaminating your equipment.

If Burning Man were a job site, OSHA would probably shut it down....

Yeah a small amount of vinegar should help neutralize the alkali. I had them in a simple backpack so none of my other gear was contaminated. I arrived on the playa with everything in a Pelican camera case and also had a Lowpro dry bag.

Overall it was a relatively dust free week and a half. We only had two days of winds - the second of which was the Saturday of the burn. The results of which you can see above. ;)

Sounds like you had a great haul, Jeff. Really looking forward to seeing some, the time-lapse will be intriguing to see! Did you have the opportunity to set up some tracks and pan slightly?

I was completely blown away by some satellite imagery I saw of a previous event, with the magnitude of it all.

No, I just did some stationary shots. Both were on Saturday - sunrise at the temple and sunset at the man. I hope to send the shots off to the BMOrg tonight or tomorrow so I should be able to start posting soon.

Just finished up cleaning the cameras. They look a wee bit better:

The mirror boxes had no more dust than normal. Nikon FTW! :)

I hit them with round two cleaning last night. Spent quite a bit of time working the ribs on the grips with Q-tips. They are now ready to go out and get dirty again. :)
