How to CLEAR a Search Field??

I'm trying to figure out if there's some easy way to clear a search field (or any text field). For example, when I go to the Maps app, my last search shows up in the search field. How can I clear that field without deleting the letters one by one?

Just to be clear, I'm not looking to clear my search history--just the search that's currently sitting in the field when I want to type in a new search term. I've done a number of searches on the this question but am still looking for a solution.

Hit the little x all the way on the right of the field.
