My wife lost her iPhone in a lake. (Tough day, I know. I will spare you the details on the phone model, and just say new.) Is there a way to get imessage working on her macbook pro without having access to her recently "lost at sea" iPhone?

I already did. They said it couldnt be done. I have found one thread that said if I got my hands on another apple device and logged onto my icloud then i could change the setting but by that point i might as well wait till i replace hers.

Are the Mac and the iPhone associated with different Apple ID's ?

Would you or your wife also happen to have an iPad or did your wife have iCloud. For the iPad, if your wife enabled text message forwarding she may have selected it on the iPad. if the iPad method does not work, ICloud backup may. if your wife chose to have an iCloud account and was on Wi-Fi prior to being lost at sea. you could theoretically if you yourself have an iPhone restore your iPhone with her account backup which does save iMessages.

She does have icloud and since we just switched phones almost everything was backed up.
I dont have another ios device right now to do that though. I think im just going to buy her a used iphone 6s and restore it to that one. Thanks for the help though.

The issue with the situation is that the phone number tied to the Apple ID needs to be confirmed which is why text message forwarding comes from the phone only. Sadly. Best of luck with this.
