how to create a small group file server

Hey guys,

I'm in my senior year in chemical engineering, and I am involved in several group projects. During the course of a project, we email project files all over the place, making it hard to figure out who's got what file and if files are updated.

Is there an easy (and free) way to create a small online file repository for our group that can be password protected? I need to have the ability for my group members to download, upload, and delete files in the repository as we work on a project.

I have 100MB of available space on my university server for a web page, but don't know how to program anything fancy.

Any suggestions?

Can you access that 100mb of space via FTP?

I don't know how computer literate you are, but the best solution I can think of would be to give your group members your ftp username and password so they can login and download the most recent version of whatever file y'all are editing and then overwrite that file once they are done editing it. If that made no sense to you I can explain it in layperson language .

I thought about the FTP option, but the way the university server is set up is that the username/password combination for FTP is also the same as our email and student resources server. So giving out my username and password isn't an option.

However, there is a "public" folder on that 100MB that can be used for a personal webpage. Is there some sort of easy web based way to allow certain people to upload and download files from the directory?

I'm sure there's a php script that allows such functionality. Does this public server support PHP? I don't know of any scripts that do this off the top of my head, but you could search http://hotscripts.com/ for such a script.

Or Subversion . Personally I like SVN's features over CVS, especially when you can do everything over HTTP, including browsing past revisions.
