I use the Logitech Mouse MX with a Mac Mini computer that has the El Capitan OS X (version 10.11.5). To help configure the mouse, I have the Logitech Control Center (version 3.9.3) installed on the computer.

I would like to configure the Left Button so that it will open folders and text files on the Computer Desktop with a double click. However, the default position for the Left Button is "Click." When I try to change the Left Button to Double Click, the following message appears: "Configuration Alert. You must assign at least one left click on this device. This button has been reassigned to a left click."

Basically, I am trying to configure the Left Button so that it performs both click and double click functions, not just one function or the other. I experienced this dual functionality with the Left Button on the Mavericks OS X, but it no longer seems possible with the El Capitan OS X. Thanks for any tips on how to configure the Left Button so that it performs the click and double click functions on the Mac El Capitan OS X.

Suppose you could assign the dual function. How would the mouse know your intent? That's why you can't. At least one button has to represent a single click, as you were told.

Yet this setup worked on Mavericks for some reason. Don't know why.
A single click with the Left Button would function as the single click, and a double click with the Left Button would function as the double click. Sounds simple enough, but I haven't been able to figure out how to configure that.

It sounds like you are trying to configure a single click to make a double click but then you still want a single click to work??? It should work the way you describe with no special config. I don't use a Logitech mouse on my Macs but the track pad (internal and external) works this way.

The single click and double click functions need to be assigned to two physically different mouse buttons, or so it seems. Yet the ability to single and double click with the same mouse button is somewhat standard as you suggest.

Thanks for clarifying. From the error you got, that does make sense.

Out of curiosity, how did it work in Mavericks? How did you trigger each behavior?

Earlier it was working with a combination of Mavericks and a Mac Pro. I could single click with the Left Button of the mouse, but also double click with the "same" Left Button. It just worked without any special configuration on my part. Now I have El Capitan with a Mac Mini and I cannot achieve this dual role with the Left Button of the mouse.
