How to create empty My Profile shadowed out head

Does anyone have a tutorial for how to create logo/image for a my profile webpage where the user doesn't upload the picture of themselves.

Something similar to this

create a new document. Whatever size you want. They fill it with a light grey. Find a picture of someone and place that picture inside the document. Edit out the background of the photo. Fill the photo with a darker grey.

Thanks but my photoshop skills are minimal.

Would I create a new layer of the picture? Not sure how to edit it out.
