It is very cumbersome, is there something I am doing wrong? the default action is archive not delete. So I have to manually move the email to the trash folder. Isn't there a way to delete an email with a single click? Using my Gmail account BTW

Why not change default action to delete vs. archive if that is what you want to do

Perfect! This worked like a charm:

How to set Gmail to delete instead of archive in Mail on iPhone and iPad
  1. Open Settings
  2. Swipe down and tap Passwords & Accounts
  3. Tap your Gmail account
  4. Select Account
  5. Tap Advanced
  6. Now below Move Discarded Messages Into: tap Deleted Mailbox

I'm having the same issue but on my MacBook Pro (MacOS Seirra v10.1.2.6) and I can't find how/where to change the setting to default delete instead of archive. Anyone still on macOS Sierra able to help?
