According to the "storage" tab on my system profiler, I have 68 GB of "backups" on my internal drive. This is a pretty big chunk of the total, and I'd like to get rid of it. It isn't my Time Machine backups - those are on an external drive and are otherwise accounted for. How do I locate it in the finder? and does anyone have an idea what it might be?

Gracias.

you're better off switching time machine off, then switching it back on, if you'd still like to have the local backup system running but just want to clear the current backups.

this way, it'll clear what you have backed up locally, then resume from scratch.
