Looks a stupid thing and I tried almost everything, but I can't find out a way to delete the NextDNS profile, even if it's disabled...

Thanks for the help

Then go into System Preferences, Profiles, and delete the profile from there.
😅

first thing I’ve done but the profile inside the network preferences is still here (and it works, also if I don’t have the Apple profile).
Maybe I’ve to manually delete a plist file or something similar?!

Yes… I ‘ve also tried to find a file called “nextdns” via mdfind in terminal but I don’t find anything.

It’s a very weird thing

Okay I've found the trouble, is the file

com.apple.networkextension

in /Library/Preferences/. But I'm unable to delete or modify it. I think I have to disable SIP to delete it... what a weird thing.

If I create a new profile from https://apple.nextdns.io, then I disable it, and delete it, the new DNS profile disappears, but I don't know why this old profile remains here!

I think I have deleted the profile without turning off the dns, so it's still there and I have no way to delete it 😤

How did you come to that conclusion?

I have these files:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.cache.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.control.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.necp.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.uuidcache.plist

and I have never had a nextdns profile installed.

You best be careful what you try to do.

Looks at my com.apple.networkextension.plist screenshot, the nexdns profile/infos is embedded/written inside this plist file. Delete it should recreate a new one without the nextdns profile but I’m unable to do…

anyway probably is a macOS bug, we’re talking about it here: https://help.nextdns.io/t/g9hf600

I don't know if they ever fixed this bug or that I hadn't noticed before; regardless, Thank You!! 👏

Bumping this because its the first result on duckduckgo maybe google too.

The solution: the deletion button isn't located under Network tab of OSX settings. Instead search "profiles" in Settings' search bar, you'll see top result "Install, view, or remove configuration profiles" and in that menu is the minus-button thing to select and delete it.

Your issue wasnt nextdns either, this happened to me with adguard too.

I just figured this out after ages of trying. I didn't want to remove the file completely because I have a ton of custom VPNs set up. I reinstalled my NextDNS profile, which synced up with the VPN profile. Then I removed the NextDNS profile which properly deleted the VPN profile like it should've originally.
