I keep having this preference file showing as corrupt by Drive Genius. Whether it is impacting anything is yet to be determined as I am having other issues with my mac constantly restarting. Typically a short time after booting up and after opening a few programs. The preference file is /User/Library/Preferences/Y29tLmFwcGxlLnN5c3RlbXByZWZlcmVuY2Vz. I have tried to figure out what program or app. is creating it but with no success. Even if there is no real negative impact with having this pref. file, I still need to understand how to go about determining a file's creator,parent, or origin.

Thanks.

Have you tried opening the file with TextEdit, to see if the contents might indicate the app?

A preference file should end in .plist or .plist.xxxxx
If it ends in .plist.XXX the file right above it ending in .plist is the preference file.
Either way it should tell in the file name what it is, such as com.apple.archiveutility.plist

The file should look like the sample below. Each preference file follows that pattern.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>NSWindow Frame Progress Panel</key>
<string>657 761 366 27 0 0 1680 1028 </string>
<key>NSWindow Frame Progress Panel Frame</key>
<string>657 761 393 24 0 0 1680 1028 </string>
</dict>
</plist>
