Subject: How to determine the Firmware revision for Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 blades ?

I inadvertently formatted my Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades before taking the time to obtain their Firmware revision IDs.

Now that they have been formatted as HFS+ and the 4 of them configured as RAID-0 using Apple, Disk Utility is it possible to obtain the firmware revision IDs, and if so how ?

OK..... I figured this out for myself.

1. With Option key pressed: Apple->System Information
2. Select "NVME Express" in the side bar.
3. Highlight the various Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB (and in my case one 2TB)
4. The firmware region is displayed under the Model: line in the lower portion of the window.
5. See attachment screen shot image

OK.... I never installed Samsung's driver code nor anything from Sonnet. Everything about using my Sonnet PCIe x16 card with its installed Samsung blades have been working flawlessly for me. I have a 1TB on one of the 2TB blades setup as APFS and I can boot from. it without issues.

I upgraded my ( advertised as new ) SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus basically from Mac OS using UNebooting.
No need to use Windows at all.

I do strongly suggest not formatting the 970 EVO Plus in Mac OS until you determine it's current installed firmware which should be 2B2QEXM7 . My 970 EVO Plus had the Mac-problematic 1B2QEXM7 ) installed.

Some retailers sell OLDER blades with the older firmware - as in my case.

You can check the current firmware under About this Mac / System Report / NVMEexpress/

If your blade has the old firmware you can either boot into Windows, download Samsung Magician which will detect the 970 EVO Plus ans allow you to update the firmware.

or . . . use UNebooting technique in the link above. It only took me 5 minutes to complete the upgrade.

I have a 970 EVO Plus installed in Sabrent USBC enclosure attached to my 2017 5K iMac. I would like to know what the firmware version is but have not been able to find out how. It does not show under NVMExpress but under USB>USB 3.1Bus>Sabrent and there is no firmware info. I tried Samsung Disk Magician on my PC but it did not see a Samsung drive (the Sabrent is obviously in the way). I even tried the Unix firmware updater on the Mac but again it did not see the drive. I just want to know if I have the latest Firmware before using the drive.

You will not be able to update the Samsung firmware over USB.

The key is DON'T format in Mac OS until the drives firmware version is displayed in : About this Mac/ System Report/ NVMExpress.

I was replying to the person who was trying to upgrade the firmware of an SSD that was in a USB enclosure. The USB enclosure will prevent the firmware updater from working.

EDIT : I'm curious,would a USB 2 external dock . Enclosure work ?
