Greetings,

I have iOS 11.2.6 and I would like to switch to the official Gmail app for my emails.

How do I stop the mail app giving me notifications and downloading new emails?

Thanks!

Disable or delete your account(s) from the Mail app. You can do this in Settings > Accounts & Passwords

However this will stop you from composing emails outside of the Gmail app.

The best solution would be to just disable notifications for the Mail app (Settings>Notifications>Mail), and enable notifications for the Gmail app. That way you can still compose mails on the stock app (which is needed if you f. ex. click a link on a webpage or something similar), but all notifications appear on Gmail.

This would mean, however, that you'd have to have the Mail app on your phone, but I just chucked it in to a folder when I had the same arrangement.

  1. Delete the mail app: Long press until wiggle, then tap (x)
  2. OR Settings > iCloud > Mail > Toggle Off
