Hello there,

I've been using an external monitor with my macbook on closed-lid mode. What's the best way to go on when disconnecting from it?

Today I simply removed the power, dvi adaptor and usb keyboard placing my macbook in the bag hoping that it would go to standby mode. An hour later when I took it out it was still running and of course burning as hell. :(

Plus, even though the monitor isn't connected still, I can't activate the screen on my macbook by pressing the "F7 - Display" shortcut.

So, what's the proper way of doing it?

Put it to sleep, unplug monitor and ethernet, unplug the power, then unplug everything else. The most important thing is to put the computer to sleep and unplug the power before unplugging USB devices. The reason for this is that if you unplug the USB devices before you unplug the power, the computer will wake up.

Also you should never hope your computer goes to sleep. You should always make sure the computer is sleeping or shut down before you every transport it or put it into a bag. Apple-Option-Eject will force the computer to go to sleep. You can also select sleep from the menubar.
