How do you do a back-up on the iPad, just like it automatically does on the iPhone. When I plug my iPad to the computer it doesn't do an auto backup?

It automatically does it, trust me, maybe you don't have a lot of files and you didn't notice it
 
Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if there is an iPad backup there.
