i lost iphotos app and was told i can not go back to mojave with out losing everything left. and i can not retrieve my photos from my mac book since i did not do a back up. photo app scans the mac, but over half showing are blank files or multiple copies. so many are missing like 3,400+ videos and photos i was storing on my mac book and not in the cloud so as to save space.

Unless you have a backup there is no way back to Mojave that doesn't include completely wiping your hard drive and starting from scratch.

you're crazy not backing up, especially when upgrading to a new macOS. I have three separate backups to time machine, all backed up to icloud and i also have all my main files on a private cloud, Pcloud.

did you back up to iCloud? if you did, you can restore them that way, but as the person before me said, the only way to go back to Mojave is to format first.

i know.. i have so much going on trying to do everything it just did not seem that important at the time. i only have 5 gb cloud between all my devices so i am/was constantly moving my photos to the iphoto app on my mac book and using "photo" for photos on my phone and ipad for what i want to need to share. Well i learned a big lesson. Just before the upgrade i moved all my photos from all my external drives to my macbook to the iphoto app and spent mega hours organizing them and then erased the hard drives where they were. and now the last 20 years of my pictures are gone forever.. sigh....I can not believe they are not retrievable some how they are there i know.

If you have enough disk space use Disk Utility to create another Volume entitled Mojave.
Google to
- Download the Mojave installer
- Create a USB installer from this
- Boot from this USB installer and install to the Mojave volume
Now you can dual boot and get your photos.

ok like what and how.. i did search for each type of file and saved the searches but there are still a great number that are missing, i did this before the upgrade and saved the searches in finder side bar. I think i may have messed myself up using google photo back up for a while to avoid cloud space being taken up and then that was out of commission google stopped that service. i read this can cause issues.

I don't not want to spend a lot of money and all the recovery programs are free trials to see 2 gbs recovered files but you have to buy into it to actually get them back

They require buying it to actually recover anything

Yes, they require buying it because it's a very complex software that dozens of software engineers spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on to help people like you who a) had no backup, and b) performed a major operating system upgrade despite a lack of backup to recover their files.

There's one other possible way: your Mac may have created an APFS snapshot immediately prior to performing the 10.15 upgrade. You might be able to restore it back to this point in time using Time Machine.

Also, you should stop using that MacBook immediately. With every click and every visited website your chances of ever recovering anything at all are slowly but surely dwindling. In my opinion it's time to turn to a professional. They know what they're doing whereas you clearly have no idea (no offense). Say goodbye to not wanting to spend a lot of money, though. It'll cost you. A lot.
