How to download videos onto iXpand

Hi! I'm a fairly new Mac user, live in the sticks in outback Queensland and so don't have access to much in the way of help apart from what I can find on the internet. Now I have an ipad air running 10.2.1. It's 64 GB and nearly full as I have downloaded some episodes of a TV show onto it. If I travel I would like to have lots of shows to watch when I feel like it. So I bought a 128 gb iXpand mini flash drive thinking I could download shows onto it from itunes. The device plugs straight into the ipad via the lightning socket. Well I tried to do this but there is no option to save the show anywhere - the show just goes onto the ipad. My question is how to get the episodes or movies that I buy onto the flash drive for viewing later on. I have purchased the show in question. Would it work if I did it on my Mac rather than on the ipad? If anyone can help i would appreciate it, keep it simple please!
