Every time I leave home, my phone starts popping up unsolicited messages about how many minutes to get home in current traffic. I'm not interested in that stuff and I assume it's consuming battery. I'd like to turn that off.

More importantly, what other apps are running in the background? I would like to turn those off too. I hope it's not constantly recording everything around me!

Go to General -> Background App Refresh. Turn it off if you want.

As for location stuff, go to Privacy -> Location -> System Services. I suggest turning off Wifi Networking (doesn't work very well, massive battery hog), Traffic, location ads, frequent locations, etc (whatever you don't want tracked).
