According to Google, you can edit documents in Google Drive in Android. Except you can't. I open a document in Google Drive and it opens in Document Viewer, which gives it to me as a read-only file. What am I doing wrong here?

The documents are just normal unencrypted .docx files, they open fine but I have no editing options whatsoever.

Any help? Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is that you have the office extension files to open in document viewer by default. Try changing that.

I think its because you can edit Google docs (.gdoc), but you're trying to edit an Office doc (.docx). You'll need to save it as a Google doc first through the desktop.

This is correct, thanks.

Google makes this very unclear and complicated though, I hope they improve it in the future. As it stands now, I have to upload my Word documents then manually right click each one in Drive and open them in Google Docs to convert them, then I have to delete the original .docx version. It's all very convoluted.

It's working now though :D

Glad its working.

If you're happy to have all of your documents converted to Google docs automatically when you upload them, there is an option in Settings....Upload Settings to do this.
