How to embed fonts in webpages?

I'm working on a new site in which I use special tft fonts, like typewriter and rubber stamp. Of course the fonts are replaced when the pages are viewed on a PC or Mac that doesn't contain the fonts. Is there a way to embed those fonts? Thanks in advance.

The only browser that supports downloadable fonts is Safari 3. The only real option is to use image replacement techniques. If you need them generated dynamically the sIFR method does a good, job, but it's a bit of a pain to set up.

It is a real pain to me as it ruins the effect. What kind of fonts do you see?

The frontpage should show stencil fonts and the text on page 2 under 'Me' should be a typewriter font. I'm about to quit altogether

Downloadable fonts is a CSS 3 feature and right now Safari 3 is the only live version that supports it, although I think the next Firefox is going to which is cool. Sadly, the majority browser is made by the idiots in Redmond and won't adopt it for years. SO, your only bet is images. You lose SEO value and gain page load time but if you really want to use those fonts, that's your best cross-browser choice.

It's a sucky answer but web progress is one beast to keep track of.

As previous posters have said, that property isn't implemented in all browsers yet. sIFR is definitely your best option at this point, but it will take some technical knowledge of editing HTML.

Thanks for all replies I've investigated sIFR and even generated three (Flash) fonts only to discover that those fonts are only useful for banners and titles, not for plain text. I thus abandoned the whole idea and settled for a compromise.
