How to encrypt your data before uploading them to services like Backblaze, a cloud backup system?

I remember hearing about how you can create an encrypted disk image (dmg) of some of your user folders. But couldn't do it to your actual user folder.

But then there are data in your user Library that you probably want to encrypt as often applications like to store your data in the user Library.

Anyway, looking for a good way to encrypt my data before uploading to a cloud backup service. Any ideas?

Hmm, looks good, except it doesn't look like I can use iCloud as the storage. It would encrypt my data on OneDrive, which is currently not encrypted. Would I need to download my OneDrive data, essentially take it off OneDrive, encrypt it, then re-upload it? Or could I encrypt what is already on OneDrive, and have anything new added to OneDrive be automatically encrypted?

Arq is a backup solution using (as you will have discovered) various cloud services for storage. iCloud is just not suitable as there is no API for access to iCloud - iCloud only works using by synchronising content between your devices and iCloud.

Arq does encrypted backups of files on your computer. So no, it will not encrypt existing files on OneDrive. If you have files on OneDrive which are not on your computer then you will need to download them and keep them on your computer. Arq will then be able to back them up to whatever storage you choose - which can be your OneDrive.

There is no benefit in copying files to encrypted DMG and then using Arq. Arq does all its encryption on your computer and only you have the password for that encryption.

I use Arq backing up to both OneDrive and B2.

Boxcryptor is also a great program, and they have a free version as well, but it's not open-source like Cryptomator. Some features are only available in paid versions.

No need to download anything, since you are using onedrive for BACKUP, those file are already on your computer. If not... that isnt a backup.

I'd suggest you to get free trial of Nordlocker with space of 5 gbs and if you are satisfied then buy it.

Backblaze already encrypts your data with AES as it is uploaded. If you prefer, you can also supply a personal encryption key so even Backblaze can’t access your data without your passphrase. You don’t need to set up any additional apps or encrypted disk images.
