Google has been useless inturning up how to repair the MS Office for Mac 2019 (and 2016 before this) issues. Excel has been getting more and more buggy and crashing way more recently. I had significant problems with MS Office 2016 for Mac that I was unable to fix so I upraded to 2019 for Mac... It has only gotten worse.

Google brings up "Open and Repair" links, but the path they describe does not exist on my MS Office for Mac 1029 (running Sierra on late 2012 Mac Mini, 2.6 GHz i7, 16 GB ram). I'm thinking I might have corrupt files as I have been using, building, growing the spreadsheets for years.

Any ideas where to look or search on MacRumors (or other Mac sites) for help with MS Ofiice issues? Microsoft sites absolutely do NOT speak to these issues. Because of the Google search 'non finds' on microsoft issues, I think MS must have some super duper 'problems suppressing' stuf working on the web.

I am beyond frusrtaed with finding no solutiuns for over a year dealing wtih MS Office issues on my Mac.
Thanks,
Dave

We're more or less abandoning MS Office for Google Docs at work. We've had this issue with Office for Windows as well, so it's not isolated to the Mac.

axboi87, Thanks for your response.

For those that use MS Office, does it still work flawlessly on your Macs? ANY hints on possible causes for my issues appreciated. Like older late 2012 Mac Mini might be a reason, other?

Anyone else having issues with MS Office for Mac (2019, 2016 or previous vers.)? Hard to believe I am the only Mac MS Office user with problems.
If it might be 'my specific computer sytem's issue, and tips on things to try? To try to deal with this issue I got CleanMyMac X (4.4.1) a few months ago. it has not helped.

I work with massive Excel spreadsheets on my Macs every day, some of which are many years old and have grown and become increasingly complex over time. Never have I ever had any trouble with Excel 2016 or Excel 2019 on neither my iMac nor my MacBook. No crashes, no corrupt files, nothing. It just works.

Honestly, I don't even understand what you're talking about, and I'm 100% certain I am not the only one who has no clue what you're on about. What do you want to fix? Why do you think your files are corrupt? How were these files created and by whom? What steps have you taken to solve the issue at hand? Have you contacted Microsoft directly for support? How exactly did you try and "fix" these files? What is your actual problem?

Also, I think it's kinda cute that you think Microsoft has the power to suppress negative press and solutions on the entire internet.

Might want to go see if getting any crash logs, to see help narrow down why. Not sure where MS crashes go, but, some of the places to look are:

~/Library/Application Support/CrashReporter
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/CrashReporter
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter
~/Library/Microsoftsomething/CrashReporter
/Library/Application Support/CrashReporter
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/CrashReporter
/Library/Logs/CrashReporter
/Library/Microsoftsomething/CrashReporter

And: might want to try uninstalling Office and re-installing: maybe something corrupt in the install.

And: Agree with @axboi87 in that have seen Office on Windows start flaking out when dealing with older files. Heck, seen a file work correctly on previous version, upgrade to new, all kinds of troubles with the file. So, can see same happening on Mac version (and yes, some folks will go years/decades with no issues, so not a truism re: flaking).

Or: maybe what you are opening got corrupted for one reason or another (eg. Office had/has a bug, disk error/corruption, etc).

So, seeing what the crash logs are saying would be a big help to start.

Thanks for your response mj_. I frequently get commands ignored, ex: cut & paste do note take (too many problems to list). A significant error that stops my work... I get an alert pop up when more than one spreadsheet is open. Alert: "No more fonts can may be applied. Please close some other documents and try again." I wondered about a corrupt file only because, like you report, my errors do not seem to be widespread (do to a global MS Office issue). I'll look for crash/error logs going forward. I have tried contacting MS directly many times to no avail. The pronblem threads I have read are so frustrating as the answers ignore the staed problem and just paste in a boiler plate reinstall, blah, blah, blah,,, even when the user has clearly stated they had done that and many other universal fix attempts. M S help literally paste the same response AGAIN. when a user 'reminds' the MS help person they had already tried that as noted in the original post.

Curious, have you ever gotten satisfaction with problem solving from official MS sites?

NoBoMac,
Thanks for the ideas! I will search for crash logs. I think I have seen them in the past, but the contents are Greek to me. I'll post them here if if/when I find one or more.
Again, Thanks for your helpful ideas!

NoBoMac,
Here is what I found at [option] / Go/ Library/Application Support/CrashReporter / com.microsoft.Excel / Data / Library / Caches / Microsoft / uls / com.microsoft.Excel / logs / apple-device-log-20190513-1825

The log is extremly long and I do not know if all the entries are needed, so I copied the the first few and last few pages of the log.

Dave
[doublepost=1557951459][/doublepost]The message Alert: "No more fonts can may be applied" that you are getting may be fixed by using a utility tool called XLStyles Tool. It is available from Microsoft, just do a Google search for it. The tool will clean individual Excel files that get corrupted with too many fonts and corrupt Names. This corruption can happen if you are copying data from other corrupt sheets or querying databases. I use it all the time in Excel 2016 on PC. I think they have version for Mac as well.

JHresearch,
I Googled, found XLStylesTool, hit 'Get', Logged into my MS account, next I got this message:
"Where do you want to install?
It looks like you don’t have any applicable device(s) linked to your Microsoft account. To install, sign in on a device with your Microsoft account. "
When I go to my Microsoft account > manage devices > add device > [only Microsoft devices are listed, No Macs. :eek:/ ]

To try to use this App, when I have time (might be a few days), I'll try to download it to my wife's Windows lap top, bring my Excel files over there with a thumb drive and try the repair the files on her computer. Unless there are any other Excel cleaningApps that would work on a Mac. That would be a lot easier, since I will likely be repairng lots of old files over time.

Thanks for the cleaning App idea!

Add to above, for stuff and giggle, might want to try to install LibreOffice and try to open the problem spreadsheets in it. See what happens. If seems ok, save the spreadsheet to a new copy as an xlsx format (will be an option for that in the Save As dialog). Then open the new saved copy in Excel and see what happens then.

Can also try that in Apple's Numbers, but, not as feature rich, imo, as LibreOffice when dealing with MS documents.

I just got another Excel crash right after the 'No More fonts...' warning. The font warning only comes up when I have more than one workbook open. Does this hint that it is not an issue of one workbook being corrupted, but something wiggy in MS Office itself? Does my crash log give any hints? I'm leaving this morning and will be on the road a few days. I'll try LibreOffice hopefully this week end. Maybe I'll try to figure out how to re-install MS Office 2019 this weekend too.

I have no idea how Excel should look in Acvtivity Monitor. Here is what it looks like right now. I wondered if some artificially created memory shortage is artificially causing wiggyness and crashes when more than one workbook is open. I believe the Mac OS is supposed to allot whatever is needed from the 16GB of physical RAM, that there is no place to increase RAM for MS Office itself, right?

Thanks so much for your help. It is encouraging.

The install may have an issue, so, yes, uninstalling and re-installing might correct.

If you are using custom fonts, that too can may be causing issues. Seen threads where the custom fonts have wrecked havoc on a system (eg. wrong format for the font file).

Might want to read this and root around to see if something odd going on with installed fonts.

axboi87, Thanks for your response.

I don't have an issue with corrupt Excel files like you do, but I have an annoying problem that recently cropped up with Word 2016 on the Mac.

I have some rather large Word documents with lots of tables in them. Recently one of those files had this problem where the all the table borders totally disappeared, and the only thing I can do is to manually go through the document, find those tables, and change the border setting from None to All for each one. It's a tedious and annoying problem.

Someone had this same problem:
