It will turn on all the way to the desktop screen and my mouse cursor and keyboard are working but anytime I try to click on safari or anything else nothing will open. I can't even shut it down, unless I hold the power button at the back. How can I fix this? Thanks

Try a new mouse. Perhaps the mouse-click isn't working.

Can you login to another profile? And if so do you have the same problem? If you don't have another profile, set one up and try it. If you have the same problem under both profiles then you may have an OSX corruption issues and reloading the OS will probably be a viable option. If the other profile is ok, then your OS is likely to be ok so just load a new profile and remove the old.

As another poster mentioned, try a different mouse.

I suggest you use a WIRED USB mouse. It doesn't have to have a lot of buttons, the idea is to eliminate as many variables as possible. A simple wired mouse should just connect and work.

If it works, then it's time to either figure out what was wrong with your old mouse, or start shopping for a new one.

If you go mouse hunting, I recommend a Logitech. Great products.
