My son is away at college. He decided to run an update on his MacBookPro11,2 from Sonoma 14.3 to 14.4.1 without first updating OCLP 1.4.2 to 1.4.3. Now he cannot boot.

I made him a thumb drive with Sonoma 14.4.1 on it to boot from and re-install Sonoma on the internal drive. This did not solve his problem.

I am thinking that what he will have to do is this:

  1. Boot from that same thumb drive.
  2. Hook up an external drive, which I will prepare here to boot on his system with the help of OCLP 1.4.3 (“Build and Install OpenCore”) and has OCLP in /Applications/.
  3. Install macOS 14.4.1 on that external drive.
  4. Boot his MBP with that drive.
  5. Launch OCLP 1.4.3 from the external drive and use Build and Install OpenCore on his built-in boot drive.
What do you guys think?

Use OCLP and "Create macOS Installer" on USB Drive, then boot from there and install Sonoma
Then Build + install Opencore (OCLP) to internal disk
then Post-install root patches (OCLP)

Here are my tips:
OCLP Tip: HOW 2 Update/Upgrade macOS with OCLP

  1. ❗️ (If u have only an iGPU and not a dGPU than) Better *NEVER use Memoji* as User Pic / iCloud User Pic with OCLP
👉🏻 ATTENTION❗️ iOS 17.1+ your Contact Photo in adress book sync to iCloud and so to your Login pic. 😱
    *** So DON'T use Memoji there either❗️***
  2. ❗️ *First install OCLP* (if upgrading i.e. macOS 13 ➡️ 14 ALWAYS❗️"Create macOS Installer")
OR IF you're on macOS "Sonoma" then first❗️check if there's a NEW version of OCLP and install this *INCLUDING* new "Build and Install Opencore" to you start disk + check/install "Post-Install Root Patch"
  3. Now you could use the system updater to get the latest macOS 14.x version – but better is to wait till OCLP developers push out a new OCLP patcher version that includes the corresponding macOS update.😉
  4. ❗️ *Install the root patches* – in "secure boot mode" always the best

Hope this helps you! 👍🏻

Did this work for the OP?
I ended up installing Big Sur to an external hard drive, cloned the internal drive to a backup and erased the internal drive. I then booted from a Big Sur installer and installed a clean copy of Big Sur on the MacBook Pro. With that I downloaded Sonoma 14.5 to that computer (via Mr. Macintosh’s links) and OCLP 14.3. That readied me for an upgrade to Sonoma, which, when completed, allowed me to restore the user accounts from my backup.

I know this was more complicated that @ready-for-Apple’s procedure, which I had tried, minus the installation of the post-install root patches, which is possibly, why I did not get anywhere with that approach.
