AM considering buying a macbook two macbook airs, one for myself and the other for my old man.

Just curious however, when you want to format the machine using install discs, how can you do this when you dont have the special external drive?

you can only do this using a network connection, wifi or ethernet or whatever... but when you are formatting a machine you dont have access to any of this...

does it have a recovery partition?

You need to read up on the Remote Disc feature. The MBA can make use of another machine's DVD drive, accessible via WiFi or Ethernet (if you have the USB Ethernet dongle).

Oh i think i will just buy the external DVD drive and burner. No harm done. And if i ever need to use a CD in the office im not in Open Plan, in a separate cubicle, so wouldbe an inconvenience to go all the way across office to get to use a CD....
