How to gain admin access in iOS X Mtn lion?

I am pretty mac illiterate....I've have the 'snow leopard' version of OS X for years, but I just upgrated to the 'mountain lion' because I'm trying to install a home architect software program on my mac and the software requires at least v. 10.8 or higher....
I think I installed the iOS 10.8 correctly, but now when I try to activate the 'home designer' software I get an error message that says:
"an erro occured while attempting to register or deactivate chief architect'. this is likely caused because you don't have administrative access to this computer."
I am the only 'adminstrator' on the computer. I tried going to system prefs and changing the setting to allow access to applications from anywhere instead of just mac app store. This didn't solve anything.
Any help would be appreciated!

First off, it is not iOS 8. It is OS X 10.8. iOS 8 is the current OS for Apple's handheld devices.

That out of the way, your question is a bit confusing. The account that you created when you setup your Mac for the first time was an Administrative account. If you have only one account on the computer, then it an Administrative account. That is the account that is used to create accounts with lower privileges. [It is also the account that can be used to enable the root account, but I digress...]

The account that you used upgrade to OS X 10.8 is an Administrative account.

The bottomline is that it is virtually impossible to conceive of a scenario in which you do not have an Administrative account. It is more likely that you are attempting to do something that the Home Designer installer does not like.

It might be useful to list the steps that you are following to install Home Designer.

Go to System Preferences / Users and groups, check that you account is actually an administrative account.

The bottomline is that it is virtually impossible to conceive of a scenario in which you do not have an Administrative account.

This can happen after a system update.
