I'm working on a new website project that may get considerable amounts of hits, so I am thinking about placing a few ads to make some money.

How do I go about this? I have never dealt with ads before. Can you get paid based on the number of hits your page gets? Or do people actually have to click on the ads? How do I find people/companies to place their ads on my page? Is there a service (google?) that just loads random ads in your page and you get a flat rate fee or something?

Any input would be appreciated.

Not sure how it works technically. But you are going to have to approach the companies yourself and 'sell' the space to them. However you may find this hard without proof that your website is successful.

Google's Adsense is based off the number of clicks on the ads, but a very small percentage of the ads can give you revenue just for impressions. There are others, but Google is one of the easiest for just starting out(in my opinion). The also have other programs for referrals to firefox, google desktop, picasa and referring others to adsense.

If you were to go to my site's new design on click on the adsense publisher referral link and sign up. Then If you earned $100.00 in the first 180 days then I would also earn $100.00 for referring you.
